Home Sweet Zambia

Hard to believe, but it has only been just over a week since we landed in Zambia. It truly feels as though we were in Ndola for months. Within just one short week, we developed incomparable relationships with one another, the faculty, the Northrise students and the kids. We were fortunate to have been welcomed by such warm and hospitable individuals who have been kind enough to make us feel right at home. Each and every moment we have experienced thus far has been life altering and full of value and lessons we will carry with us for a life time. From playing with and assessing children at various schools; attending the Apostolic church; visiting Arthur Davidson Children’s Hospital; and much more, we have grown, learned, and been challenged. We were given a complete tour of the hospital which was eye opening and informative, as their procedures differ greatly from those in American hospitals. Some of the other highlights of the week have been going to the market to buy our chitenge (traditional Zambian wraps) and arriving in Livingstone. This weekend, we were able to enjoy the beauty of Victoria Falls a Safari in Botswana. Tomorrow (Monday) finds us traveling to Lusaka where we will work in the clinics at Family Legacy for the remainder of our time in this amazing country.

One week to departure...

After months of preparation, we are starting to pack our bags for our July 7th departure!  We will share our experiences here on this blog about every 48 hours! Our team is comprised of 12 undergraduate Baylor Nursing students and two faculty / staff members. We are privileged to be led by Dr. Lori Spies, Associate Professor of Nursing, Missions Coordinator, and current Global Fulbright Scholar! Dr. Spies is conducting a multi-country Fulbright in Zambia, India, and Vietnam. Mulishani from Zambia!

We woke to our first Zambian sunrise this morning. After a deep breath of African air we laid our eyes upon the vibrant red dirt that featured prominently on our inaugural day in Ndola and at Northrise University. The students were eager sponges today despite their tremendous jetlag.   Our day was filled with touring the community and the school; meeting those with whom we will work; and preparing for that work.   We soaked up the sights, sounds, smells, customs, and language of this place and began trying to create some order of it all.    I loved hearing the constant questions and observations from our students as they aimed to understand this new world.
